NSW: Syd airport workers protest job cuts

SYDNEY, Aug 1 AAP - Sydney airport staff have walked off the job for an hour to protestthe company's plan to slash the workforce by 40 per cent.

About 50 Sydney Airport Corporation Limited (SACL) workers gathered in the old Ansettdomestic terminal to bring their plight to passengers.

They fear outsourcing of maintenance and ground crew jobs will jeopardise safety andsecurity at the airport.

SACL has been ordered by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission to put a two-weekhold on the plan to fire 40 per cent of its 400-strong workforce.

The Public Sector Association (PSA), which represents SACL staff, said the airportneeded the entire existing workforce to operate smoothly and did not need to cut costs.

The company earned $376 million before tax last financial year and today released a20-year plan, forecasting increases in passenger traffic.
