Vic: Libs pledge to boost DNA testing
The Victorian Liberal Party has pledged to boost funds for DNA testing by $28 million if elected.
State opposition police spokesman KIM WELLS says a massive backlog of cases currentlymeans DNA samples taken from a burglary scene might not be analysed for 18 months.
He says a Liberal government will increase funding to the Victorian Forensic ScienceCentre by $28 million, boost DNA sample tests from 300 to 1,500 a week and increase thenumber of testing staff from 19 to 60.
Mr WELLS says the pledge is part of the Liberal Party's bid to dramatically cut crimein Victoria.
But Acting Premier JOHN THWAITES says the Liberals cannot be trusted to keep theirelection commitments.
He says a backlog of DNA testing, caused by the testing of more than 3,000 prisoners, has been completed and any urgent tests are given priority.
