QLD: Bravery medal comes almost 10 years after robbery
EDS: This story is embargoed until 0001, Monday, 23 August, 1999.
Former policeman RAYMOND JOHNS has been awarded a bravery medal almost 10 years after a
faulty gun saved his life in a struggle with an armed bank robber outside his business at
Campbelltown in Sydney.
Firearm experts still can't explain why the gun jammed after it was shoved into his stomach
and the trigger pulled by the fleeing bandit who had just robbed the Illawarra Credit Union.
The weapon fired without fault in every test afterwards and Mr JOHNS says it's a miracle he
didn't die.
He was nominated by a friend for the bravery medal - the third highest Australian
decoration awarded annually by Governor-General Sir WILLIAM DEANE.
The 43-year-old father of three is now in the real estate business and based on
Queensland's Gold Coast.
The medal will be presented during a ceremony at Government House in Brisbane on September
16.
